This place had a lasting impact on me as a kid.
Here' a few cool buildings downtown.
Now it's on to where Mark Twain grew up.
It's a little sad but the stone house below is actually a newer building attached to the front od MT's house. They had to do it to preserve it. It's been through more than a few floods in it's day. The white house beside it is actually his house.
This tan house was Becky Thatcher's house. She was his first true love. It was closed for a while and even for sale but the town eventually got enough money to restore it and open it back up. They've built a flood wall so this little block has a pretty bright future.
Me by the fence MT conned some kids into painting. Not much of the real one is left.
This was his dad's law firm. There's a really macabre but funny story behind it.
There was supposed to be a memorial built to honor Twain but it never happened. There just wasn't enough money to go around. It was during the Great Depression. This small model is all that remains. I'd like to see it built someday.
Here is Huckleberry Finn's house. It's a reproduction.
The outhouse. It was locked,,,,
Hey, I tried.
An old photo of TW in front of his house.
These next few are of the inside.
A glimpse of Beck "The Babe" Thatcher's house from TW's window. Hmm...
.
He had these old photos taken then mailed them to seven of his close friends across the world. The cool thing is that all seven made it back to his birthplace after all these years
Ok now for the story about his dad's law office building...
That one scared the pudding out of me as a kid.
This was a cool shop that sold miniature trains. I went in and asked if they had a Twain Train. I think it just confused them. The poor kid called several people from the back for help. By then it wasn't funny and I almost felt bad. I thanked them and politely left. Twain Train.... get it? Oh well.
Went to the cave outside of town but the tour took over an hour. No too much on little caves with tons of foreigners. Was still feeling that joking around thing so I thought it best for everyone if I passed on it.
Drove up to Lover's Leap. The view and weather were remarkable. Spent over an hour there watching the Mississippi River and the boats go by. It was time well spent. I did ask one couple if they were going to climb over the fence and jump. They didn't think it was funny and left shortly after that. Guess today wasn't a funny day for me. I entertained myself though.
